I am delighted that you are considering sending your child to my college. The college has made tremendous progress over the last three years in terms of the examination results achieved by pupils. The number of pupils achieving five or more good GCSE passes has almost doubled in the last three years. I believe that all pupils have the ability to learn if they are well taught and are expected to behave. The college is not complacent about its recent successes and is constantly striving to further improve in all areas of its work.

Pupils are fortunate to have a very experienced team of well qualified specialist subject teachers working in the college. All subjects have their own dedicated teaching rooms with the appropriate resources and equipment. Both the teaching and support staff often give freely of their own time to help pupils make progress or to enhance their learning experiences. The college offers a rich and varied programme of activities for pupils beyond the regular taught curriculum, which serves to enrich their overall education. This includes sports teams, trips abroad (Paris and Skiing in Austria) and educational visits to places such as the Science Think Tank, Land Rover, Bescot Study Support Centre and the National Space Centre.

Headteacher

I believe that traditional standards of dress and behaviour are critical factors in supporting the development of an atmosphere to promote learning. Frank F Harrison Engineering College has a uniform for all pupils which includes the wearing of a blazer. The sixth Form Council requested the introduction of a Business Dress Code for years 12 and 13 which further helps them to be seen as role models for the younger pupils of the college. I ask parents for their full support in promoting the highest possible standards of dress at all times. Similarly, the support of parents is crucial when it comes to matters relating to the behaviour of pupils as, working together as a team, we can all promote and strive for the highest possible standards from all of our pupils.

As a designated Specialist Engineering College, additional funding is used to further develop the college as a centre of excellence for the education of our pupils in the specialist subject areas of Maths, Science and Technology. The college aims to provide pupils with a modern education which prepares them for the world of work in the 21st century. Very industry specific programmes are being developed, particularly in the areas of Engineering and Construction, with the support of employers from local industry who are keen to offer our pupils the opportunity to enter employment or further training when they leave the college.

The college prides itself in operating a Safe Site Policy in that pupils are not allowed to leave the premises at break or lunchtime. I believe, as a Father myself that when you send your child out in the morning you want to know that they are kept safe throughout the school day. I am sure that you will approve of and support this policy and also appreciate the fact that the college has invested significantly in improvements to both the dining and playground facilities to make the site a more attractive place for the pupils at these times.

The college is a genuine community college in that its facilities are used seven days a week for every week of the year. There are excellent relationships with the on site Community Association who also provide a very wide range of Adult Education classes throughout the year. The school is committed to working in partnership with its community in the widest possible sense. By all working together we can all help to achieve the one thing that is most precious to us all - the very best for our children and their futures.
