The Modern Languages Department teaches French to all pupils at Key Stage 3 and to an option group at Key Stage 4.

 Where to find us

We are located in two classrooms on the ground floor of the building, near to the Main Hall. Ms. Young is in Room ML1 and Miss Montgomery is in Room ML2.

Facilities

Each of our classrooms has a whiteboard and attractive educational wall displays. They are fully carpeted and equipped with a computer and printer, an overhead projector and cassette recorders. ML1 also has an interactive whiteboard.

We have a video player for use in either classroom.

All pupils have regular access to the school's computer facilities during our lessons.

Teaching at Key Stage 3

Pupils are grouped according to ability into three sets. Sets 1 and 2 study French for three periods each week. Set 3 study French for two periods and are taught literacy skills for their third period, in order to complement their French studies.

In Year 7 all pupils follow the Camarades 1 Scheme of Work.

In Years 8 and 9 Sets 1 and 2 continue to follow the Camarades 2 and 3 Schemes of Work. Set 3 follow the O.C.R. Entry Level Certificate French course.

Teaching at Key Stage 4

At Key Stage 4 pupils study French for four periods each week. They study the O.C.R. French G.C.S.E. course and the Scheme of Work makes use of a variety of text books and resources in line with pupils' ability.

Extra-Curricular Activities

We participate in the school’s Gifted and Talented programme by holding after school and holiday classes. We have held sessions recently for the following groups of our highest ability pupils:-

Years 7 and 8 - Beginners’ Spanish

Year 9 – National Curriculum Level Booster classes

Year 11 – G.C.S.E. Grade Booster classes

We also take pupils to inter-school language days, to a local French-speaking restaurant and invite a French drama group into school to perform a pantomime.
